How It Works
Smart Database Replication is a module within Smart Management Frameworks (SMF) that handles delta replication between Netezza systems in a controlled, repeatable, and auditable way. It keeps a target Netezza appliance or database continuously in sync with your source — without manual intervention.
Replication jobs are defined through the SMF Control Studio interface, where engineers can configure source and target connections, schedule windows, and alerting thresholds — without writing bespoke shell scripts or maintaining fragile NZSQL extract pipelines.
When replication fails or lags, SMF raises an alert through its event management system. There is no need to periodically check whether last night’s job ran. If it did not, you will hear about it.
Need to replicate from Netezza to a cloud platform such as Databricks, Snowflake, or another non-Netezza target? That is handled by Smart Data Frameworks (SDF), our dedicated cross-platform replication and migration product.
Capabilities
Replicate incremental changes from a source Netezza appliance to one or more target Netezza systems. Keeps secondary systems current without full nightly refreshes.
Run delta replication on a fully configurable schedule — hourly, nightly, or tailored to avoid contention with peak workloads. No event-driven complexity.
Replication is designed to survive interruptions. When a network outage, system unavailability, or other transient fault clears, SMF automatically resumes from the point of failure — no manual intervention, no data loss, no gap-filling. Alerts notify you that a lag occurred; the engine handles recovery itself.
Every replication run is recorded: start time, end time, row counts, and status. Queryable through SMF Control Studio and reportable for compliance.
Configure, monitor, and control all replication jobs from the SMF Control Studio React web application. No command-line required for day-to-day operations.
Replicate from a single source Netezza system to multiple target appliances simultaneously — for example, maintaining both a DR standby and a dedicated reporting instance from one replication job.
When to Use It
Keep a warm standby Netezza system continuously updated with production data. In the event of a hardware failure or planned maintenance, the secondary system can be promoted quickly without manual data reconciliation.
Replicate production data to a dedicated Netezza reporting instance. Analysts get near-real-time access to current data without competing with production workloads — and production query performance is protected.
Replicating from Netezza to Databricks, Snowflake, or another cloud platform? That requires Smart Data Frameworks (SDF), which is purpose-built for cross-platform delta replication to virtually any target database.
Distribute specific datasets from a central Netezza instance to regional systems or downstream platforms. Useful for organisations with regional data centres or business units that need curated data subsets.

Smart Database Replication is a Netezza-to-Netezza data replication module within the Smart Management Framework (SMF) from Smart Associates. It uses delta replication to continuously synchronise data between Netezza systems, supporting disaster recovery, failover, and reporting offload use cases.
Smart Associates Smart Database Replication identifies changed data (deltas) since the last replication cycle and transfers only those changes to the target system. This delta approach minimises network bandwidth consumption and replication windows compared to full-table transfers.
Yes. Smart Associates Smart Database Replication is designed for DR and failover scenarios. A secondary Netezza system is kept in sync with the primary so that in the event of a failure, the secondary can take over with minimal data loss and downtime.
Yes. One of the primary use cases for Smart Associates Smart Database Replication is offloading reporting and analytical queries to a replicated secondary system, reducing load on the production Netezza platform and preventing heavy reports from affecting operational query performance.
Smart Associates Smart Database Replication includes fault-tolerant design: if the replication process is interrupted due to network outage or maintenance, it resumes from where it left off rather than restarting from scratch. No data is lost or skipped during recovery.
Yes. Smart Associates Smart Database Replication allows granular selection of objects to replicate — specific tables, schemas, or database subsets — rather than requiring whole-database replication. This supports use cases such as replicating only the tables needed by a downstream reporting system.
Initial setup of Smart Associates Smart Database Replication typically requires a one-time baseline load to synchronise the target system. After that, ongoing delta replication runs without production downtime. A maintenance window may be needed for the initial load depending on data volume.
Yes. Smart Associates Smart Database Replication can be used as a migration tool — replicating data from source to target, then performing a cutover once the target is in sync. This is a low-risk migration approach that minimises downtime compared to traditional backup-and-restore migrations.
Yes. Smart Associates Smart Database Replication supports replication between different Netezza appliance generations, such as from a PDA or Striper system to a Hammerhead (CP4DS) appliance, making it useful for hardware refresh migrations.
Smart Database Replication is an SMF module available as part of NSP Managed contracts that include SMF. Contact Smart Associates to confirm module availability within a specific NSP contract tier.
Replication lag with Smart Associates Smart Database Replication depends on data volume and network bandwidth, but delta replication is designed to keep the secondary close to real-time for most workloads. Contact Smart Associates for a sizing assessment specific to your data volumes and change rates.
